Using Apps to Help with Caregiving

Caregivers tend to experience high levels of stress and anxiety and much of this is due to the fact that there is so much information to remember and organize. Being a caregiver means you must maintain records of health and medications for the senior in your care. To do this, there are some Smartphone apps that can be very useful. These apps can also be used by seniors to help them remember important medical information.

1.            Tell My Geo is a personal-health-record app that will allow healthcare providers to access medical history through a Smartphone. The app also has a GPS locater. It is available from Android for $9.95 per month. This is a great app for seniors in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

2.            Personal Caregiver is from iPhone at no charge. This app helps seniors and caregivers keep track of medications. Since many seniors take multiple medications at different times during the day, this app can be very helpful.

3.            Pain Care is also a free app that has won numerous awards. This app helps seniors communicate their level of pain. This is a great app for seniors who cannot speak because of a certain medical condition.

4.            iBioMed is an app that contains a treatment log book for therapies, diets, medications, test results and allergies. It is a portable medical record that has a time-stamped journal.

5.            Public Speech is a free app that can help caregivers record the reminiscences of a senior who may not be with us for much longer. This app makes for a great activity that will engage seniors and allow them to record memories and their life stories.

Helping Seniors in a World of Technology

The world of technology can be a scary thing for many seniors because they are unfamiliar with many things. To help with this, teaching seniors some pointers and tips will help them learn how to use items and be more comfortable when doing so. The following list contains some great ideas on how to help seniors learn about technology.

1.            Most seniors have a computer in the home but only use it to send emails. There are even some seniors who are not online. Setting up an email account is a great way to enable seniors to stay in touch with friends and family members. For those who already have email, show them some of the other things they can do online, such as looking up important medical information.

2.            Most seniors have cell phones, but they do not know how to enter contact information. Take some time to set up their phone book and show them how to navigate through the menu on their phone.

3.            Programming remotes may seem like a simple task for most people, but seniors often have trouble with this. Instead of programming it for them, walk through the steps and teach them how to do it. The smile and glimmer in their eyes when they finally “get it” will be very rewarding!

Healthy Minds for Seniors

There has been a lot of research regarding mental health and fitness in seniors. The research has revealed that seniors who have a healthy mind are more apt to live longer and avoid many health complications. Most seniors are preoccupied with maintaining their physical health and they tend to neglect simple activities that can promote a healthy mind.

1.            Physical activity is very important for seniors. Not only will it help maintain the strength of bones and muscles, but it will help with mental health as well. In addition, keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels low will also be beneficial.

2.            Exercise can be very beneficial. It will decrease heart rates, lower blood pressure, improve energy and can even help to prevent the onset and progression of dementia.

3.            Activities that stimulate the mind are suggested. Seniors should try to read, do crossword puzzles and engage in other activities that force them to use their minds on a regular basis.

4.            Having low blood pressure will reduce the chances of a stroke. Strokes are linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. High blood pressure will cause damage to blood vessels which can later create many health problems. To help maintain and lower blood pressure, seniors should watch their weight, avoid smoking and exercise regularly.

Mental Fitness for Elderly Individuals

The body will go through many changes as people age. Some of these changes can affect the way the brain functions. This is why it is so important for seniors to take steps to improve and maintain their mental fitness. By being mentally healthy, seniors will also improve their physical health at the same time. The following list contains some information on how seniors can improve their mental health.

1.            Stress is a common mental issue that many seniors experience. High levels of stress can lead to depression and anxiety. To help reduce stress seniors should have someone they can talk to. Physical activity, such as walking can also help to reduce stress.

2.            Seniors should protect themselves from falls as much as possible. Injuries to the head can affect the health of the brain. By avoiding falls, seniors can maintain mental fitness.

3.            Staying socially active is one way for seniors to stay mentally fit. Social interaction will force seniors to use their mind. Having social outlets is also a great way to reduce stress. By taking care of the mind, seniors will be improving their overall health and reducing the chances of suffering from future medical problems.

4.            Mental fitness can improve health for many seniors. When the mind is healthy, the body has a lower chance of problems. Seniors with good mental health have lower rates of stroke and heart attack.

Are Investment Blogs Trustworthy?

Don’t Bet Your Nest Egg on a Financial Investment Blog

By Sam Thacker

A recent study by global financial services giant, ING indicated that investors over 40 years old trust financial blogs more then financial brokers.

The study published by Business Insider indicated that 48% of those over 40 trusted financial blogs while only 36% said they trusted securities brokers.

When I look at that statistic I am puzzled. Have bloggers become really good at instilling trust of their readers or have brokers as a group lost their reputation for honesty and fair dealing?

Perhaps the answer is a little of both.

Anyone regardless of experience, training, licensure, or regulation can write a blog and write anything they want. A glossy website, a nice photograph of the blogger and a catchy website name is all that is required to become a financial personality.

When reading financially related investment blogs you should keep these tips in mind:

  • While some bloggers may be real experts at discussing investments, it is better to consider a blog entertainment than a place to go for serious advice.
  • Bloggers may not have any real expertise or training in analyzing stocks, bonds and mutual funds.
  • There is no regulation of most financial bloggers. There are a few unscrupulous bloggers that may recommend investments because they are trying to run up or down the stock price so they may benefit.

Securities brokers are regulated by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) and must pass licensing exams and adhere to strict regulations about what they can say about a stock, bond or mutual fund.

You should pick a securities broker like you should a doctor.

  • How experienced is he or she in the type of investment you are interested in?
  • How long have they been in the securities industry?
  • Are they paid based on you individual trade or a flat percentage of the assets of yours that they manage?
  • What kind of continuing education does your securities broker attend?
  • Does their overall philosophy of financial risk match yours?

Picking an investment advisor that charges a percentage of your total assets under management is often the wisest approach because they are not incentivized to “churn” your portfolio.

If a financial advisor does their job right, they will sit down with you and listen to your investment goals and learn about your risk tolerance. They will understand your tax status so they avoid recommending securities that have high tax implications and they will help you plan your long term investment strategy to grow your investments at a pace that balances risk and return.

Since your investments are so important to your financial security, take your time in picking a licensed securities advisor and read financial blogs for entertainment and overall education, but don’t bet your investments on the word of someone who doesn’t know your specific investment goals and risk tolerance.

Baby Boomers Enter Golden Years

For members of the Baby Boomer generation, the golden years have arrived. While many of these individuals planned to retire, most have made the decision to continue working. This is largely due to the fears about finances and the health care system. Below is some information that was gathered through a survey conducted by Home Instead Senior Care.

1.            More than 59% of American Baby Boomers have a serious concern about the health care system that is in place. The majority of these individuals believe their generation will overload the system.

2.            A large portion of Baby Boomers will work past the retirement age in fear of possible financial restraints. Baby Boomers are actually being encouraged to continue working for as long as they can.

3.            69% of working Americans feel it is their responsibility to provide for people of the generations that came before them.

4.            These statistics were gathered from a study that was conducted by the Home Instead Family Care network. 1029 American adults participated in the study. The information paints a picture of what members of the Baby Boomer generation will face as they enter retirement.

Good Nutrition for Seniors

Author notes: A good article from Lorence Glorence on Healthy Eating – reminds me of the book Eat This, Not That! Has anyone read that book? I have and found it very useful. Another good book on nutrition and healthy eating is Engine2Diet – about all the good food to eat… of course, it did not include meat or chicken in the recipes! I think I need to read that one.

What are your favorite nutritional foods?

Good Nutrition for a Healthy Lifestyle
by Lorence Glorence

Important foods for health:

1) Leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, oranges and apricots for Vitamin A and beta-carotene.

4) Whole grains for complex carbohydrates.

5) Fresh fruits for various kinds of Vitamins, fiber, and a minimum amount of sugar (check with your doctor if you’re a diabetic).

Keep Away From:

1) Sugar filled foods like ice creams, candies, sodas, etc (sugar cravings are strong with some seniors).

2) Hot dogs, bacons, deep fried foods, fat filled chicken wings are laden with bad cholesterol.

3) White breads, pastas, pizzas, have been wiped off nutrition during the polishing process.

Needless to say, smoking and excess consumption of alcohol will do your lungs and liver no good. They also serve as catalysts to cancerous cells. Seniors are also better off sticking to vegetarian foods as often as they can, since age slows down the digestive system as well. Apart from following these tips, put in a good bit of exercise and take your nutrition supplements according to prescription and you’ll be raring to go.

Note: Each person’s nutritional requirements differ. Please consult your physician before you start any kind of diet.

Watch for Depressed Seniors Following the Holidays

For the majority of people, the holidays are a time of joy and sharing. While this may be a festive time of year, it can also be the most common time for seniors to experience depression. There are many reasons for this, such as feeling lonely, missing loved ones that have died, feeling old and not needed and having financial limitations. Regardless of the reason for the depression, it is important for seniors to get help when the depression affects how they function on a daily basis.

1.            Most feelings of depression around the holidays are temporary. Seniors will be able to continue functioning and will go on with daily activities. However, there are some seniors who will become clinically depressed and will not be able to function. This is when the senior will need some professional help.

2.            Seniors who have changes in sleep and eating habits may be depressed. They will also show very little interest in things they usually enjoy. These are key signs that the senior may be suffering from depression.

3.            If the depression is ignored and not treated, it can lead to other problems such as an additional loss of independence, premature death, suicidal thoughts and actions and the aggravation of symptoms associated with other illnesses.

4.            Caregivers and family members need to watch for depression warning signs around the holidays. These include changes in mood, behavior, habits and weight, inability to concentrate, lack of energy and interest, persistent sadness and withdrawal socially.

5.            There are many forms of treatment available to help seniors deal with their depression, but the first step is to notice the symptoms and talk to a doctor.
